There have been quite a lot of postings about traffic problems in the village over the last few months. The fact that we are on a designated HGV route is historical -- we're stuck with it. As far as speeding motorists are concerned, we do at least now have a measure of the problem. I am the Town Councillor who helped to arrange some visits from the Police Speed Awareness Message System (SAMS) team. I believe that the results were posted on the Police website, but to save a lot of trawling I've put a copy up on Google. As you can see there seem to be two causes of concern. Firstly, the proportion of drivers who exceed the speed limit is rather large; secondly there must be some with total disregard for the fact that those signs with a (30) on them are for public safety -- see highest recorded speed in Chapel Road.
I think with all the cutbacks nothing will get done and it will just get worse.
The fact that Station Road and Bunwell Road are both situated on the designated HGV route which was established in the mid 1990's, do these routes get re-assessed after a time for their suitability?
The HGV route dates from when the A11 Wymondham bypass was still in the design stage (remember those days when you could turn left at Gurney Reeve's corner, drive to Attleborough, do your shopping, come back... in less time than it took to wait for a gap in the traffic to turn right to Wymondham)?
Anyway, the original design made for a junction further South without access to Station Rd. Spooner Row residents lobbied the Council for a change in design so we would have direect access to A11. (We WERE warned to be careful what you wish for). Result was the HGV route designation.
Now, if (IF) they bulld the A11-B1077 relief road from there, that's the one to route traffic to Diss & the Buckenhams away from Attleborough town centre, see other postings, that could be good for us because it would be a preferable route for all the Banham Poultry lorries that currently go along Station Rd & Bunwell Rd.
the results are rather funny as some of those dates that the speed people were there was a bank holiday! and the others when the peak traffic was completely over! anddddddd they were each time in full view of the drivers too!! so that report is a total waste of time and our money! as per usual!! i was very close to these ridiculous speed check areas everytime, and consider these no use whatsoever in helping the village get the traffic speed, and the traffic reduced from the village! ppplease...just walk along the road on station road and you will see how dangerously fast they drive! statistics of 27 miles an hr is no way a true statistic. and the amount of cats that get killed over a year on the road shows theyre going way to fast to even stop too.let alone the squealing of tyres when kids go on the road and the cars etc are speeding through narrowly missing the children, prams, dogs, horses, etc etc.even having to pull up so skidding in front of the railway barriers so as not to go on the lines when a train is coming...and you still say people arent speeding through the village.what crap!!!
Yes I was walking down Station Road not so long ago and a car came skidding down the road for some distance and just missed us. And fast moving HGVs have forced car drivers way up on to the grass bank further up Station Road in a desperate act to get out of their way.
As so many cats are getting run over, it is just a matter of time before it is a person or child that is hit.
We need measurements taken at more meaningful times to get an accurate assessment of speed and traffic use which should result in getting some traffic calming measures put in place.
Putting an HGV route on country roads right through the middle of an active village was a stupid idea, who was responsible for authorising this? I bet he hasn't got an HGV route going past his front door.
Not being funny but even doing 30mph and a cat bolts out from a hedge theres no gurantee your going to stop. I cant see them putting up a speed camera because your mental moggies are getting run over.
No one has actually said they want a speed camera - there are other forms of traffic calming more suitable. The allocated HGV route through Spooner Row is more than just an issue of moggies running into the road.
What else would you suggest because Speed bumps are out of the question, There is already a Slalom/Chicane. I think you lot might just have to get used to the fact there is always going to be a person who is going to break the law.
put a mini roundabout at the junction of station road where it meets the boars, so it stops vehicles( mainly cars) speeding round that corner. Why not another chicane along station road before the station as that is where most speeding occurs, as there is usually cars parked somewhere from the station to the school
