Yes definitely have a chat with the farmer if you can find out who he is. If it is Mr Alston, I have found him to be OK on the rare occasion when I haven spoken to him in the past.
Where do you live? Within the village or on the outskirts? I was up till 3 then up again before 7 and never heard a thing. Surely a visit to the farmer and a chat would be sufficient, or is it Mr. Alstons land, who as we know doesnt care about us villagers as the planning permission suggests!!!!!
Sorry for delayed reply. I'm not in the village, as such. The one that's has been / is going off all night is some distance away, probably not on Astons land. It appears to be intermittent or dependant on wind direction and other factors. It's not in my back garden, but it must be disturbing an awful lot of people that are nearby and I can't understand why they tolerate it. A request for information as to the number of complaints SNDC receive annually under the freedom of information act reveals that they receive a complaint on average every 1.5 days. Yet not one abatement notice has been served.
"as we know doesnt care about us villagers as the planning permission suggests!!!!"
Don't fall for sweeteners like paying for improvements to local facilities; you've already paid £254,580.98 in 20011 and £317,128.72 in 2010 towards them.
If you're reading this and use gas guns, I suggest you take an hour or two to park up nearby one of yours, and watch. All you're actually doing is wasting gas and damaging the relationship between the farming community and other people that share or live in the countryside. I hear and see what goes on in a field hour by hour, day by day, month by month throughout the year. I can tell you now; you've all been "done" and that you should be suing the manufacturers of gas guns under the trade description act. Go and ask what works in the local agricultural merchants (you know which one) - they freely admit they are ineffective despite selling them to you. There is plenty of well informed information online regarding their ineffectiveness, even video of pigeons less than 20 metres from a fining gun, not taking a blind bit of notice.
I "get" that there's a problem with pigeons destroying crops, but please take the time to go and have a look at how much of your crop is still being destroyed while one of these things is banging away all day long. It's actually in your own interest to do so!
blimmey, I have just used the cap payment link http://cap-payments.defra.gov.uk/Search.aspx and am shocked at what subsidies the farmers get. how do I become a farmer? I want a career change.
I am getting terrorised by these devices. When will farmers realise that they have no effect on birds visiting their fields. The thing goes bang and the pigeons fly off, returning a few minutes later.
All that actually happens is that hardworking people in my village are woken up on the weekends at the unacceptable time of 6am, when what we need is a little time in bed to recuperate from the weeks hard work.
This demonstrates a total lack of respect and consideration by the local farmer and by South Norfolk council who allow this practice to continue. If we are talking economics, the crop benefits the farmer and maybe a couple of his workers but on the whole, most of us who are made to suffer don't benefit from it at all.
I have got to the point that I value my weekend peace more than I value his peas, to the point that on a Friday evening I walk out to the scarer, turn off the gas and disconnect the battery. If he continues with this pig-headed attitude, worse will befall his device. I feel I am getting driven towards illegality and that is just not fair!
It is high time these devices were banned by law, they cause misery and I know that if I were to make that amount of noise, that early I would be arrested and in serious trouble. Why do farmers get away with it?
Langley is a long way from Spooner Row. Even so, have you contacted the Environmental Health Dept at the Council? The banging of this bird scarer is clearly a noise pollution problem, causing you loss of sleep and driving you mad. If the council can't/won't do anything about this, then write to your local newspaper or contact a local news programme, they are always looking for local stories that affect people.
