From a source in South Norfolk , it has become very apparent that some of the posts being put on this site are not being well received there. The Planners feel very hard done by, despite being rightly castigated on immediate past performance, and the controlling administration are incensed by open discussions, critical of the way matters are being handled there.
The message is be careful. If have an opinion may it clear it that it is your opinion and throw in the words 'allegedly' may' appear' etc etc and of course post ANON, as so many do already when making clearly outrageous, wrong and biased comments using their own agenda, inclusive of which, is to shut this site down.
This is an excellent site and appeals to the public at large, who are the voters . Those who are in so called power do not like this and allegedly they would rather compromise free speech to apparently pursue their own agenda, because right now they are deeply unpopular by association on account of what is happening in London at Parliament on a daily basis.
Facebook and Streetlife in Wymondham as well as this site are being frequently and regularly monitored and posts are being quoted out of context in a VERY concerted effort to undermine what is being said and turn this into a personal attack on key individuals in an attempt to shut them up.
South Norfolk Council trying to close this community forum down and stifle free speech?! What has our elected district councillor, Jack Horby got to say about this?
If our district council is going down the Orwellian route, then they need to be reminded that they are there to serve the electorate, not the other way round. Bad governance starts with oppressing free speech and can be considered a bullying tactic.
I hope they are costing the time they spend 'monitoring' local social sites.
My impression of viewing this message board over the course of many years indicates that it is very responsibly moderated. Criticism of the council's activities should be permissible in a public forum in a democratic society in the 21st Century - indeed, accepting constructive criticism is a good thing for moving forward. The council need to come to terms with this and accept that they are far from perfect and are upsetting many communities and individuals with their plans and vision. In a quest to "open up", South Norfolk Council have their own Twitter page (twitter.com/SNorfolkCouncil) but this seems to be a vehicle used by them purely for self promotion. People feel unable to comment on anything the council posts on Twitter because they can be identified and monitored. It's got to the point now that even when you vote at an election, the council can find out whom you voted for! Orwell really is alive and kicking. Unsurprisingly, there is evidently very little interest in the content of the council's Twitter page as there are only a handful of retweets or favourites and less than 2000 followers. Individuals who post messages on the Spooner Row Message Board in support of the council's activities never identify themselves so we never know if they are representatives from the council or developers, both with vested interests. By contrast, it is clear that most comments of a negative connotation are from local residents as they are unhappy with what is being forced on them. Historically, I would suggest that Spooner Row has always been regarded by those in authority as an "easy target" for pushing through "difficult" objectives, the A11 bypass, HGV route, traveller sites etc. - things they would have difficulty pushing forward in other villages or in Wymondham Town. The long term vision the council have for Spooner Row is clearly evident and includes mass development and a desire to eventually join it up with Wymondham. Look how Hethersett is being ruined. This is not what the villagers want. Those who value living in the vision the council has for Spooner Row, which probably includes industrial units, 1000's of houses etc. would not have moved to Spooner Row in the first place if that is what they wanted. The council need to remember that it is the taxpayers of Spooner Row that pay their salaries and they are there to represent us and provide the services we want. What on earth does localism really mean? If it just means letting local councils to decide how to spend more money from central government (probably because central government doesn't want to be burdened with the responsibility and bad outcomes that will result from having to make the massive cutbacks) - and they continue to ignore the concerns of local residents - then the whole thing is a farce. The so-called public consultation process is ridiculous and just seems to be a process that the council has to follow so they can claim that any decision they come to is "fair". In reality, in my opinion, they have hidden objectives and agendas and have generally decided what is going to happen way before any consultation. People are so disenchanted with local councils that most can't even be bothered to comment, probably because they are too busy running their own lives or because experience shows that there is very little point in saying anything. The council seems to be arrogant and self serving. Selected individuals call themselves part of "the cabinet" for example, like they are in central government (what a joke). It is all about their career development - they push through "difficult" projects and go for promotion. Fancy building a leisure centre right next door to the council offices, for example. I could go on and on and on.....but I'm getting bored (with the council). If you are reading this and you are connected with the council and the decisions they make, you should reflect on all this and act positively. These are my own opinions, based on my own observations over the years. I think a lot of people will agree with me.
Well said. They actually just wanted us to advertise local events on this site and not have an opinion on what is happening locally - see other threads. How authoritarian and oppressive is that? They should just concern themselves with their jobs, which they are paid to do. I can remember one of their representative shouting in the face of a resident at one of their public consultations a few years back because she didn't agree with him - scarey!
A few posters on here have made a good case for shutting down this once great site. It is allowing the posters to put out misleading information on various issues and this should not be allowed. For instance to claim that The Leisure Centre at Long Stratton is for SNC staff is incorrect. The LC is for the local school and for the local residents. Stop moaning about everything.
I actually said "Fancy building a leisure centre right next door to the council offices". My point is that the decision (by the council) to locate the leisure centre next to its offices is somewhat convenient. I did NOT say it was built specifically for SNC staff. You are twisting and moaning about things yourself, simply because the facts are uncomfortable. Are you in someway connected with the council? If you are, perhaps you could tell us all on here (the mere residents of Spooner Row, who actually live here) what your ten year plan for Spooner Row is? We'd like to be consulted now and you can find out how exactly we all feel about your plans, before you waste any more of our money in making decisions that we are unhappy with.
There appears to be a lot of key board abusers on this site and you are one of them. It was a good site and it still can be. Just stop allowing keyboard abusers to put out misleading info. All of your points about some of the issues on here are just ridiculous and you know it. Stop moaning. There is nothing wrong with putting out news about local events as that would be a good use of this site.

You refer to my comments as misleading and ridiculous because you are using this as a tactic to avoid answering my specific questions. You just don't like people expressing their opinions on matters that will adversely affect their quality of life. If you do not like the content of this website, please go elsewhere. You have no business trying to determine its content. Get yourself on Twitter and you can find out if people agree with you. You refuse to say if you are connected with the council, but you would appear to represent them. I will ask again, but you probably won't bother to answer - What is your ten year vision for Spooner Row? Even if you have nothing to do with the council you could still make a comment on this. We'll then see if the users of this message board agree with you or not.
Nothing wrong with expressing opinions. The problem with your posts is that you put out misleading information and that's not correct. Bring back the good old site. What is your 10 point plan for improving this site.

You've repeated yourself. You won't answer my questions. Useless. It's no more my site than it is your site.
Thank you for all your comments on this topic. This forum serves the village very well and is managed responsibly. All discussion topics concerning Spooner Row are welcome.
