Has anyone noticed even worse than normal speeds this past month? We were regularly getting 1.3 but recently are getting 0.5 download speeds with higher upload speeds of 1.0 mbps. An engineer Visited today and said he couldn't find a fault. At 0.5mbpd it is barely useable but EE don't seem interested.
Oh yes! The last two or three days have been worse than ever and I simply gave up on some internet shopping after the third attempt (and four hours in all).
I still haven't followed up getting our line/wiring checked by TalkTalk so it's good (but sad) to know through your post there is still a wider problem in the village. TalkTalk have just put their prices up so it's going to be an interesting conversation when I can devote the time and energy to having it
We are a low profit backwater so nothing will change until we get fibre , if we ever do. Hate bottom line criteria for doing things but as we live in a Tory controlled area .....
Man on the TV last night from Martlesham (next to PO research towers) complaining that he only gets 2 Meg while his neighbours super fast. 2 meg would be wonderful.
You can get 8mb from ThinkingWisp, probably within a week, and up to 40mb from satellite within about 2 weeks.
Depends on what you want to use it for. Most places in the village should be able to get 1.5 - 2 mb from bt, most issues are caused by wiring / other equipment in the house.
I am sure there must be an entrepreneurial villager would come and resolve your issues / advise you how to optimise what you have available to you for a reasonable fee....
Our problems are nothing to do with wiring and equipment in the house - it has been checked. What is needed is an updated, 21st century broadband system that the rest of Wymondham enjoys.
I get 1.91 Mbps on a BT. Line in the village (checked at 10am Sunday). I know others who have posted here who get 2.0 - 2.1. In the village so it is definitely possible and available.
if you are getting 0.5 you have a fault. (I assume you live in the village)
fault will either be
exchange to house (estimated 12.5% chance) or restriction on line due to historical fault (another 12.5% chance)
wiring or equipment inside house (estimated 75% chance)
if you have a fault, fibre broadband similar to what is available in Wym won't actually help you as much as you think because the ingress connection (your current phone line) will remain the same. I know people with fibre in wymondham who only actually get 4 - 5 mb due to poor connectivity and contention.
We have lived in the village for 15 months and have continually had a poor experience with internet connectivity. We have a BT landline with an EE modem, which BT have been out to on three occasions and every time the fault has been on the line. The highest speed we have ever have via copper is 1.9 MBs, but the line has again failed this week so no connection. We also have a Thinking Wisp dish which is generally up at 5-6 MBs, but during bad weather can drop to less than 2MBs, which has been the case over the last few weeks on numerous occasions. By far the best connection has been my EE mobile phone which has had as high as 44MBs inside our house. That said even this has been at less than 5MBs over the last week. It does feel like their is a more fundamental issue with all of this connections in the last few weeks. Noting that I suspect that all three of my feeds come from the Bunwell exchange either, via copper cable, the Thinking Wisp aerial or via the the Talcolsten mast GSM aerials.
Further to my last, all of my internet connections have now picked up speed significantly, again leading me to believe that BT Openreach have been working Bunwell exchange. Thinking Wisp is delivering close to 8Mbps and last night we were getting as high as 75Mbps on EE 4G via mobile phones. For those who are not aware you can purchase both portable and mains powered 4G wi-fi hotspot modems from EE which run of the mobile phone network.
Phone has not worked for 3 days now Keep getting 'were working on it' messages from Talk Talk (..edited..) and nothing else. Finally got broad band to run speed checker having tried all day as running very slow and confirmed at 0.35 download and 0.49 upload
Anyone else having these issues please?

My Plus net (BT) line is currently running at 2.14mbps
Did you notice that the line went off during the rain? Perhaps it is a water in the connection thing. Has TalkTalk booked you an engineer to check the phone line?
TalkTalk are ( i believe) the only ones in this area (perhaps sky as well?) who don't use OpenReach for the phone line, so I think you need to shout very loudly at them!
The only advice I can offer for TalkTalk is as soon as your contract is up move to a OpenReach provider because their customer service (in my experience) is shocking, by far the worst
Thank you Matt and duly noted. Now 5 days without a phone and e mail updates promised but......Even attempted an on line chat which went '4 Days ? I need to put you through to technical team ...wait will be approx 25 minutes'. Web station will edit out my response to that but you get the drift.
Worse than useless and costing me money but cheap most of the time and shouting to someone based in India in Anglo saxon English as opposed to Gujarati which I suspect would be more effective , when all they are doing is following a script is a recipe for even higher blood pressure readings than normal.
I suppose you pay your money and you take your choice BUT I had heard similar things of BT
Without explanantion or anything........ Phone service returned tonight after 5 days but incoming calls still diverted to my mobile and the net up to its usual tortoise speed, the norm for Spooner row.
I expect I will see a massive compensatory reduction in my bill ( yes I am being ironic )
That's interesting. Let's hope, if they are installing new fibre optic cables for the new development in Bunwell Road, then they will be installing them for the rest of the village?
My internet is currently running at 0.02 download and 0.75 upload. Been the case for a few days. Needless to say I am currently connected via my mobile! We have had two engineers out who both claim there is no problem- this despite the fact that a year ago we were getting 1.5mbps download speeds. I have contacted EE dozens of times but just get stock responses. I am so fed up with the 'service' I am paying for. I would fe delighted if I could just regularly and reliably achieve in excess of 1.0 Mbps! Fibre is on its way- should be here by autumn apparently. I won't hold my breath.
Our download speed, when broadband hasn't dropped out completely (which it has done frequently of late), has continued to be in the 0.1 - 0.2 Mbps range. This has meant it's been impossible to have two pieces of kit running at the same time. Hopeless!!
We've got so disillusioned that a chance conversation with two telecomms engineers at a friends house last week led to us applying, and getting, a subsidy from the Better Broadband Scheme. Unfortunately 4G (which would have been installed for £0) wasn't an option due to the lack of signal so we've had satellite installed (cost to us £100). When it was commissioned and tested this evening we were consistently getting 19/20 Mbps. For the first time ever we were able to connect to iPlayer and get a programme to play, no buffering, HD quality picture, perfect sound.
If we'd known it was so easy we'd have done it a VERY long time ago. From initial discussion, subsidy application, installation and commissioning = one week.
We used ALine Telecomms Ltd (from Garvestone ... Roger and Chris) who work with Rural Broadband. We cannot praise their advice, help and service enough. They even did the subsidy application for us. The monthly data charges seem to be on a par with 4G. At this point we can't say whether the 20GB data plan we've opted for will be enough but as we don't stream lots of music or films our feeling it it will be plenty for emails, browsing and the odd iPlayer programme.
Better Broadband for Norfolk are still peddling the line that Spooner Row is scheduled for fibre in 2018 .... yep, not holding our breath on that one!
So glad we've taken action on this and hope it gives encouragement to everyone else who is still struggling with their broadband.
