Some of you will know that I have been experiencing problems with my Wisp broadband and 2 weeks’ ago I started looking at other solutions.

I widened the search to try and bring about a solution not just for myself but also the village.  This involved speaking with people at the Department for Culture Media & Sport, Better Broadband for Norfolk (BBFB), the Greater Norwich Growth Board, Rural Broadband, EE, BT Openreach, South Norfolk Economic Development Unit and as at this morning I even had bid proposals prepared for Wymondham Town Council and a soon to be announced broadband infrastructure fund from John Fuller, the leader of South Norfolk Council. 

This morning I received some good news from Martyn Lemon, Chair of the Village Hall Committee (oh, I had spoken to him as well).  Openreach has today placed a traffic management order to conduct works at the corner of Chapel Road and Guilers Lane under the description of "Overlay Lay Approx M Of Duct 54/56 In To Link Existing BT Boxes To Facilitate Spine Cabling Works" between Monday 5th June and 9th June.  

This is Cabinet 41, one of 5 new fibre enabled cabinets being installed by BBFN.  We are not getting "fibre to property", as this is a "fibre to cabinet" solution that will use the existing cables from the cabinet to each property.  This means that the pub will get super super fast broadband at 100Mbps speeds but this speed will fall away the further you are from the cabinet.  Most of us should see 35 to 50 Mbps.

This does not mean that we will have fibre next month.  BBFN are keeping to their 9 months from survey timescale and that was only a few weeks back.  To those that didn’t know, the Openreach timescale is October 2017 to June 2018 BUT things are clearly moving forward.

Thanks for this. It reinforces what I posted a while back after talking to the Openreach technician. The only thing I would urge caution with is the speeds. I was told that the route to the cabinet next to the pub was it very direct (It goes up station rd and down the A11 to Wymondham). He said this would restrict speeds and 30-50mbps was more likely there. He suggested that properties would be looking at 10-20mbps.

Dear Robert, I am considering moving to Spooner Row but I have concerns over the connection speeds. Following research I see that Fibre is ”in scope” according to Openreach, your post however suggests things are slightly ahead of this. If you have any further information on timelines I would be grateful if you would share?

I had hoped to have something back from BBfN today but nothing yet.

Word had reached me that Openreach would be conducting the ducting checks shortly, what the contractors call the "rod & rope report" but I have not seen any vans on Norwich Road.

The placement of both DSLAM cabinets will be in June (this is an Openreach statement so treat as you will).  I do not yet have a date for services to be "live at cabinet", nor any likely property connection dates.

Thanks Matt, I also noticed this.

Just had the report update this morning; fine from Norwich Road to Spooner Row but blockage found at the crossing.  No surprise there!  Openreach have made a request to Network Rail and I am trying to reach the local NR chap and chase.

Still working on this.  Openreach has now approached Network Rail for permission to undertake the necessary road works to clear the blockage.

No idea how long it will take to obtain this agreement and get actual boots on the ground.

BTW Just noticed from my roadworks alert that Deopham get their broadband cabinet this week.

First thanks to Robert for all his work for the village in this area. 

Second , can you please advise if, when we are live with fast broadband , we need to upgrade with our service providers  to super fast or will we see an improvement in speeds straight away with standard broadband,

I have been told that the Cabinet at the pub will offer a high of 100 Mbps but that individual user speeds will depend on the properties location in relation to the cabinet; the pub gets the highest speed but the last house on Chapel Road is likely to get the slowest.  

The technology we are getting is fibre to cabinet and not fibre to property.  We may need to get together as a community and start digging trenches in order to get full fibre anytime soon.

More activity on the broadband front...

The contractors finished up yesterday afternoon the cabinet install at Guiler's Lane and power has been installed.

I am pushing Better Broadband for Norfolk on when the cabinet at Top Common will be installed.

Two blockages were identified in the ducting along Station Road.  One has been cleared with community help and the second is due to be cleared by Openreach later this week.  SEE BELOW.

Works location: From opposite the junc of A11 J B1172 LEAVE SW to approx 90m south east on station road

  

Works description: WYMONDHAM, NORFOLK 41 - DSLAM 478662 - BLOCKAGES – Excavate onto BT ducts for the clearance of duct blockages in cw, verge to facilitate spine cabling works.

  

Responsibility for works: Openreach

Thanks for the update Robert.

Any idea how much the speed drops off the further up Chapel Road the wires get?

And does the whole network of cabinets need to be installed before anyone gets access, or do they role it out even if only one cabinet is ready?

 

Hearing horror stories from friends about BT's poor service and incompetence, I plan to run my Thinking Wisp alongside fibre for a couple of months until I know it works reliably!

Hello Toby

I am hoping for 50 to 60, so with you being another 100m along I would think 40 to 50Mbps.

Talking to the connection engineer this morning final speeds will depend on cable and connections.  What I do know is that the cable running above our heads is likely to be aluminium and 40 years old, and the pole connections are fairly flakey.  Several of us had issues earlier this year with bad pole connections at the jointing box outside Two Hoots.

Everything seems to have gone quiet on the "fibre on pole" tests of last year.  With ultra fast broadband now being rolled out, I joked with the Openreach guy this morning that I would see him back here in 5 years time.

John Henry Group back in the village this morning laying fibre.

A 36 fibre strand cable was laid on Friday and today they start on laying the main 96 strand cable with 500 metres going in.  The guys have 2 Km to lay back to a cabinet on Norwich Road (the old A11).

With regards to Top Common, I have seen an updated works notice this morning for installation of the cabinet on Wednesday.

Fibre now installed from Norwich Road to Top Common and on to Cabinet at the pub.

John Henry contractor now at the box connecting the fibre to the cabinet.  Electricity in place and tested. 

No date yet as to when the boxes will be commissioned.
