Construction of £1.9m Norwich south recycling centre starts next week
Work starts next week, Monday 22 March, on the brand new £1.9m Norwich South recycling centre. The larger modern recycling centre is set to replace the current site at Ketteringham later this year.
Consultation feedback has helped shape the plans for the Norwich South site. There will be low-level bins meaning people will not have to climb steps to recycle their waste, and there will be plenty of parking for cars, bicycles and vehicles with trailers, plus a one-way traffic system to smooth traffic flow and reduce queues.
Bargain hunters will also benefit from a new large reuse shop, which will be 8 times the size of the current one at Ketteringham.
The new Norwich South recycling centre will complement the new £2.75m Norwich North recycling centre, which is already under construction and on track to open this autumn.
Cllr Andy Grant, cabinet member for environment and waste, said: “It’s great to see the teams are starting work as planned despite the challenges brought by the pandemic. With construction already well underway on the new Norwich North recycling centre we’re on schedule to open the two new sites later this year.
“Together the two new recycling centres are a £4.65m investment in providing recycling facilities fit for the future of the growing greater Norwich area. I’m particularly pleased that the large modern sites will give us the space for much bigger reuse shops as each of our popular reuse shops already stops on average 100 tonnes of reusable items being thrown away every year.”
The Norwich South recycling centre is being built on an underused part of the Harford park and ride site using available spare space. The construction will not affect the day to day operation of the park and ride and the site is expected to reopen as planned next month, when demand is expected to increase as lockdown restrictions are eased.
Konect Bus operate all the Norwich park and ride sites and services on behalf of the county council. Jeremy Cooper, Managing Director Konectbus Ltd, said: “We are pleased to have worked with Norfolk to incorporate the recycling facility at Harford without impacting on our Park & Ride operation and believe that the conscientious recyclers will want to share their journey into the heart of the city by travelling on Park & Ride.”

Notes to editors
The recycling centre project is being managed by Norfolk County Council and built by Pentaco Construction Ltd who were appointed to lead the construction following a competitive contract award process.
Organisers of the car boot that had previously been held regularly at Harford park and ride are working towards reopening at Sprowston park and ride when covid restrictions allow.
Other recycling centre improvements
• Norfolk has been expanding its network of reuse shops with 14 now at recycling centres across the county. The reuse shop at the new Norwich North recycling centre will be the largest in the county
• A new recycling centre for Wymondham as the current Wymondham Recycling Centre is very small with a single-track access road and due to proposed housing growth around Wymondham and Attleborough, we’re proposing to build a bigger site that is more accessible
• Improvements to the sites at Sheringham and Morningthorpe to increase the size of these sites, or relocate them, to improve recycling and access onto these popular recycling centres

Great to have better recycling facilities in Norwich. I am suspicious about one of the paragraphs in the News Release which says,
A new recycling centre for Wymondham as the current Wymondham Recycling Centre is very small with a single-track access road and due to proposed housing growth around Wymondham and Attleborough, we’re proposing to build a bigger site that is more accessible
Where is this bigger and more accessible recycling site going to be located? I hope it is not destined for Spooner Row as we have enough problems with lorries and traffic as it is. The new site would be better located in Wymondham where most users live. Attleborough people tend to use the Thetford recycling centre.
