I have been checking the BT Wholesale ADSL Checker each morning since the cabinets were signed off and I am pleased to announce that Fast Broadband is now available in Spooner Row.
Here is the link to check your own availability and likely speed.
We live in School Lane and the cabinet is not active - still says planned at 40-50Mbps for our phone number, unlike the phone number for the pub which says available at 78Mbps.
Contractors have laid cable to cabinets, but not aware of the fibre being blown through yet?. The stretch I refer to is Station Road. Contractor told me there was two cables laid, one capable of holding 32 and the other 96 fibre optics. He did not know when the optics would be blown through as was not done by them, hopefully not long now!
I have also ordered the 50Mb package from BT after seriously looking at PlusNet within my review.
In addition, I have also moved my mobile to BT as it uses the EE network and I am sick of O2. If anyone else is on O2 and noticed the drop in service, be aware that the mast that serves Spooner Row went down on 22/06/18 and they have no idea as to when it will be back operational.
I think that the issues with School Lane and Top Common might be down to the Cabinet at Top Common still missing its backup batteries. I have raised this with BBfN and will let everyone know.
Thanks for the update on the O2 mast which is still causing problems with our service. They had advised us that the problem had been fixed when it hadnt been.
For those of you not yet "approved" for fibre broadband, here is the update this morning from Better Broadband for Norfolk;
Hi Robert,
I’ll double check with John, but no I’m not aware of any issues. Different cabinets take varying times to go through commissioning, so I’d expect it to be live within the next few days.
I have contacted my current supplier and they have advised they can swap me to fibre within 5 working days. I am changing supplier anyway to get a better deal, but thought this might be useful for anyone staying with the same supplier.
OMG! Just taking a stroll around three village and taking advantage of 4g signal outside. I've just checked the link posted by Robert at the top of this board AND Openreach's website. Top Common box is in service! I can't quite believe this is happening. We have had no internet connection now for almost 15 months. This is better than Christmas to me right now!!!
We live on School Lane and I have just contacted our service provider (TalkTalk Business). They say the cabinet is not accepting orders (see reply below)
"I have checked to see if we can offer services for fibre on your line however we are unable too. Having checked this it currently looks like the cabinet in your area is fibre enabled but however it is not currently accepting orders. We would need to wait on this to see if the cabinet in your area will allow us to place an order for fibre. I would recommend checking back in a few weeks to see if we are able to do this. If you have any further issues please do not hesitate to contact us".
Would the person who lives on School Lane and was told they will have fibre connected in 5 -7 days please let me know who provides their broadband?
More from TalkTalk Business - We can't get fibre on School Lane.
"Thank you for contacting TalkTalk Business. I apologise for the delay in the response. Ultimately, even if the BT Wholesale checker shows that Fibre broadband connectivity is available, this does not mean that TalkTalk Business may be able to supply a Fibre service at the same exchange. The BT Wholesale checker only describes Fibre connectivity on the BT network. An exchange may have a portion of the equipment required to supply Fibre, but it is actually your green street cabinet that requires additional equipment in order for Fibre broadband to be available on your line. Moreover, Fibre broadband is only available on lines that are within a certain distance (line length) from the street cabinet. If this is present and the line length is correct, our systems may report Fibre is unavailable to you if we do not have our equipment present at your exchange for Fibre. At this moment in time, we cannot provide a Fibre service on your line, and there is no foreseen date for availability of a Fibre broadband service. If you have any further queries, please don't hesitate to contact us."
We were pleased to here that at long last our village is catching up with Broadband. Then this morning I was disappointed to find that both BT and Open Reach have indicated that we are still unable to obtain "super fast fibre" here at Pilgrims Farm. The Open Reach website indicates: "Your cabinet is enabled for Superfast fibre however you're not able to order fibre just yet. This might be because the length of the line is too long to get Superfast speeds. We're actively looking at other options." This is particularly odd as we have two neighbouring properties that have both been successful in ordering the new fibre connection, one through BT and the other through PlusNet, with scheduled connection and suggested speeds of between 70 and 80 megs, compared with our current half a meg'ish appalling speed. Whilst I expect our line may be much older as it is likely to be the original line to the farmhouse, the length of line would be the same or possibly even less, and we are closer to the cabinet than most if not all on Chapel Road. On the checker it appears that most properties cannot get the new connection and it is only a handful that can. I'm hoping that this will gradually improve over forthcoming weeks, as more connections are made or upgraded. I have submitted an enquiry to Open Reach (as there does not appear to be any means of calling them and speaking to a human) and asked for clarification as to when we can expect connection or advice of what needs to be done. The automated response indicates they will "...aim to respond within 28 days..".
Hopefully we wont have to wait too much longer for our progression into the 21st Century, but I'll not hold my breath just yet.
Thanks to Robert Foster for efforts and updates so far.
Does this mean that most of the properties in Spooner Row are still without a decent broadband speed? Are all properties operating from the Top Common cabinet (cabinet 40) still at the same slow rate?
Looking at the BT Broadband checker for School Lane, nothing has improved.
Firstly when people are using the checker are they using dslchecker.bt.com ? This will show the cabinet you’re connected to, if someone who is near can order the fibre service and they are on the same cabinet then something is wrong.
In some situations you may think your connected to the same cabinet as your neighbour but the installation of a new cabinet may not mean your get moved. This is down to regulations from Offcom that prevent Openreach moving your copper cable to the nearest cabinet as it will ultimately increase your overall line length. The easiest way to explain this is this; say you have a line of ten houses, with the old cabinet at the end of the line house 1 will be nearer than house 10 so they will get a better speed, but if house 1 was already a long way from the cabinet the speeds will still be poor, with house 10 absolutely terrible. Along come Openreach and install a new cabinet outside house 5, every house that telephone cable passed house 5 will connect to the new cab, as there cable will be no longer overall and they will now get brilliant internet speeds. Unfortunately houses 1 to 4 can’t connect to the new cab even though it may be metres from their property as if Openreach move the cable technically it would go up the road before going back down again and this makes the overall length longer, even though the copper bit, that slows you down will be a lot lot shorter. Madness but Offcom rules.
Yep, I used that link. When somebody who lives on Top Common or in School Lane gets a faster connection can they please let us know and tell us who their service provider is? Thank you.
For our telephone number the Fibre to Cabinet option has disappeared from the DSL checker table. Looks like only those accessing the cabinet near the pub will get faster broadband!
Further to my post yesterday, when I left this morning at about 7am and drove past the cabinet next to the pub, there was an Open Reach engineer working on the cabinet. I'm hoping they are still making connections for everyone. Will continue to monitor and report back if i get a reply or manage to establish an upgrade.
This may help regarding availability, follow link below
This was what we have been told by BT.........
Normally it takes a few weeks from activation to accepting orders, don't be put off by the length from cabinet explanation, that's just one explanation of why you may not have availability yet.
Have contacted BT , EE Talk Talk and have even had BT salesperson ring me up asking if they can help.
After 10 mins of 'you must be miles from the new cabinet' ( No ) and if true which it isn't why have neighbours got it and I haven't ..... no answer 'it depends on the dist arrangment ..' I pointed people on the same cabinet 41 and further away have got it and that that there is only one cabinet our end because we are a small village, got him really quite rattled and p***** because dead easy sale had morphed into nothing .
Eventually he admitted he did not understand and I should contact Open reach directly , ( as it it a technical issue) something which you cannot do and when he said well I can offer you up to 10 Meg I told him politely to shove it as that is what we have now
This process has been and is continuing to be shambolic.

I am meant to be connected on Tuesday and have apparently been guaranteed 50mbps with Sky. I suspect this is not possible bearing in mind I only get 0.6 Max at the moment and there appears to be issues with our connection. I cant understand why my next door neighbour would not be able to get the and offer but I bet the reality is that Sky can’t offer what they have promised.
Stephen if it does work please let me know as I finally got half and answer from TT tonight which admitted that they do not have their links enabled BUt they will let me know when they are.
I have Sky already on TV
It was ever thus with TT who always seems to be on the end of the Open reach queue and to be frank they do not seem to care and never have
Following "unable to get fibre" comments from 2 The Loke and 7 Chapel Road in recent days I have spoken to Better Broadband for Norfolk. It appears that a "data error" has occurred at Openreach and a small number of property addresses have not been updated to state that fibre is available. This matter has been brought to the attention of Openreach and will be resolved in a few days.
To those impacted upon please check the address checker (wholesale or BT.com) over the next couple of days.
Don't bother speaking with broadband providers until this error is resolved, as they are all currently using the incorrect data.
Robert Foster has just advised me that Open reach have ****ed up and have incorrectly updated the website that everyone uses and they hope to have this resolved by the end of the week.
Hence the reason some are getting not available messages
Hopefully we have just successfully upgraded our Talktalk package to fibre - they have confirmed that it's available at our address in School Lane. Apparently an engineer will have to do something at the exchange which means that it will take 10 days or so. They have said speeds will be around 40.
We live a few doors down from Robert so will be on the same cabinet 41 but its still showing as unavailable for us too. It had initially shown up as being available when i checked the day it went live, but thought we would wait as we were going away for a few days and ever since then it just says the cabinet is live but we cant get it just yet, its all very frustrating!
Peter Frampton and Matthew Clark your properties are now showing as fibre enabled.
It looks as if Openreach has sorted out the earlier data problem and those properties in the village throwing up a "not available" message earlier this week should now be OK.
When your photos upload/download in seconds instead of hours........when your online shopping can be done in minutes......when you can enjoy using your iPad without losing signal.....HEAVEN.
At last we have confirmation that we can connect at Pilgrims Farm. Go live date given as 07/08 so a little while to wait and meantime the service level on the existing appalling Broadband has deteriorated even further to pretty much non-existent. The cynic in me suggests they do that deliberately to get everyone to pay to switch. Nonetheless, I would strongly recommend shopping around for deals and if you are with BT don’t just automatically go with their website packages. BT tend to be around £15 to £20 per month more expensive than many other providers. When I called to enquire as to why that was and to effectively complain as to why I have been charged so much for so many years for an appalling service, they somehow managed to over the phone offer to cut their website price to me by £7 per month. Even with that I still found a much better deal £10 per month cheaper with £75 cash back and included calls to mobile (which BT confirmed isn’t available on any of their Packages).
I’m not advocating everyone should leave BT, as I may find the service from my new provider is no better and perhaps it is worth paying BT the extra, but I’ve decided to give it a try. Everyone has their own requirements so worth taking a look on the “Uswitch” website to see what deal suits you best.
Here‘s hoping for the future speedy Broadband we deserve.
Hi Robert, just wondered how you have got on with BT fibre and EE. We are near end of Chapel Rd and have had so many problems with itswisp. I tried using the link for fibre checker but as we don't have a live landline it cannot give us a reading for fibre.
