Pleased to report that the remedial work has begun on the floor. The collapse has been caused by a water leak under the floor. This has washed away some of the piers that supported the floor joists. The piers were made of clay lump and brick, a common practice way back when. Interesting point is that written on one of the joists is the name “D Bone” anyone recognise that name? Maybe he was a local tradesman?
Further update.......The name is BOND and not Bone as previously stated. Now it can be seem quite clearly.Does anyone know if this gentleman is still with us? He would be 88 - 89 years old now.
The hall progresses with all the main claylump piers removed. We await soil test, then the work can begin on rebuilding the piers in block and brick. Then hopefully we can get our new floor down.”
We will have exciting news on the committee room soon, so keep watching for more information!
The hall floor is progressing....with new footings needing to be dug out to a depth of 1.5 metres. Water table has been a problem in places, heavy manual work digging out wet clay. It may not look like it, but we are on schedule!
This just goes to show how high the water table is in Spooner Row and its damage to buildings even long-standing buildings such as the village hall. It is very worrying that the default for Spooner Row is to keep building lots of new dwellings which is storing up future horrendous flooding problems - as if we haven't got enough flooding problems in the village now.
Well done to the Village Hall team for keeping us updated on the floor repairs. Hope its all good soon.
