Noise at night in Queen Street?

At 3:30am this morning I was suddenly woken, for the third night running, by a very loud high pitched fast rev motor whine lasting about a minute before it wind-downs.  Sunday/Monday nights it was a bit later, maybe 4:30 'ish.  Have heard it sporadically before but always in the middle of the night.  It wakes me even when all the double glazed windows are shut.

Does anyone have any idea what it is/where it comes from?

We heard it too on Hill Road, we hear it a lot it comes from the electricity overhead cables.

Interesting.  It's not the normal buzz or corona discharge I've associated with electricity cables.  I've got a recording of it from Tuesday so will run it by a friend of mine who is ex-EDF.

If it is the cables then I'd expect most of the village must have been woken by it at one time or another.  Scared the living daylights out of me the first time!

This comes from 5G.

I don't think we have 5G so that would rule that out. Could it be an electrical device from a neighbouring property?

I agree, it's not 5G here.  Corona discharge is a well recognised issue around pylons and power stations, less so domestic cables/supplies due to the lower voltage, I believe.

An electrical device is what it sounds the most like .... but what is going to be turning itself on/off in the middle of the night?  Haven't had chance to ask around yet but will do as and when I see our neighbours.  Makes the most sense as my post hasn't been inundated with "yes, us too" replies.

It could be that some people are not that sensitive to high pitch sounds and sleep through it.

I had a meeting with a UK Power Networks chap recently and I have forwarded a copy of this thread to him in the hope that UKPN might know.

Could it be the electrics on the railway line? That can emit a high pitched whine.

Julie, please see message below from UKPN.

The linesman I spoke with said likely to be a transformer and not a line.  Mostly pole mounted transformers in the village, so see where your property is fed from and see if this helps.

Robert

Good afternoon Robert,

If there is a whine being heard from a transformer I would suggest that it is raised for investigation through our General Enquiries through either their phone number, 0800 0294285  or website,

https://www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/internet/en/contact-us/.

I would not like to comment on what it is without more information.

Kind regards,

Charles

So

Robert, thank you so much for checking this out.  I think if it was coming from the transformer nearThe Boars then many more people would be hearing it.  It is so loud as to wake me with a hell of a start and what makes me think it might be mechanical is the "wind down" sound when it shuts off.  It's a bit annoying being woken up but at least it's happened so many times now that I know it's not something to be alarmed by when it does happen.
