Having read the LINK magazine I was appalled, quite frankly by the advice proffered there about flooding which simply turned ALL the responsibility back onto the householder and offered not one jot of real help.
However , I was very pleased to note that in a recent report at South Norfolk there is a proposal to appoint a Flood and water management officer , but better still there is a trial of a ‘ditch walking ‘ scheme in Long Stratton where they were badly hit , which is designed specifically to raise awareness with riparian land owners as to their responsibility to maintain and repair their ditches.
I will be pushing for this to be expanded across the district and raise awareness with council and Environment Agency owned watercourses as well.
Hill road , Bunwell road and Queen street seem to me to be obvious locations where this would be of value, in Spooner row and in Suton street .
Dear Julian, thank you for including School Lane in the proposal.
As there is a blockage in the corner of the field by the bend, the water has nowhere to go other than being absorbed into the ditch. It is important that it is maintained. It still beggars belief that this area was given planning permission for 7 houses with an attenuation pond!
With the new development they have included a large water body literally adjoining Suton Lane which will inevitably over flow in to the drains.
However. The drains on Suton Lane are not fit for purpose as it is, with many drains blocked and gullies demolished by HGV traffic. After rainfall walking or cycling from Suton Street to town is like manoeuvring up a waterfall with flowing water making conditions treacherous. Especially when it freezes....
I have had numerous near misses with traffic swerving the water to avoid getting them wet.
The junction of Suton Street and Suton Lane regularly resembles a lake and the drainage there needs sorting properly, especially with a couple of hundred house on the crest of the rise adding to the problem.
The highways agency are not interested even after several complaint submissions.
